Vélez Blanco is famous for its impressive cave paintings and the Renaissance castle, which is the pride of local people. Visit the lively markets of the "Comarca Los Vélez" region. That visit includes the four towns of Chirivel, María, Vélez Blanco and Vélez Rubio.

 

In addition to fruit and vegetables, fish, cured meats, cheese, fabrics, bags, clothes, hats and household goods, discover an excellent selection of olives and almonds from the region. Of course, churros are a part of the local cuisine too. This crispy Spanish pastry specialty is best served with hot chocolate or coffee.

The Visitors Centre "Almacén del Trigo" (Grain Warehouse) in Velez Blanco offer a wide range of information about the park which extends over 22,500 ha and comprises many varieties of flora and fauna, several of which are protected.

The botanical garden in María is another recommendable sight. An extensive collection of plant species as well as the nature park with its typical vegetation offers the visitor an interesting combination of nature and plant culture. 

 

Natural history

In the regional museum "Miguel Guirao" in Vélez Rubio you can walk on the geological traces of the region. Archaeological exhibits take visitors on a journey through time, back to the days of Islamic and Roman settlements to the Bronze Age and the Neolithic.
